Plant-Based Universities Basel

A purely plant-based diet is the next logical step in combating the climate crisis.

Aim

We need universities to take responsibility to tackle the climate crisis. The scientific evidence is clear: we need a transition to a plant-based food system to combat the climate crisis, man-made biodiversity loss and further transgressions of planetary boundaries. That is why we are calling for a gradual transition to 100% plant-based food by the fall semester of 2030.

Effect

Switching to plant-based catering can save up to 50% of greenhouse gases and 76% of agricultural land globally. In 2023, 434 tonnes of CO2eq were emitted by the university in the food sector. This will be significantly lessened by switching to plant-based catering.

Status

The team has submitted the initiative to the student council. Following this, in October 2025 all skuba members will be able to vote, whether students are for or against a demand for 100% plant-based catering at the University of Basel. The team is also working on increasing the visibility of the campaign.
